The Roman amphitheater of Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The Roman amphitheater of Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second largest city. The amphitheater was constructed in the 1st century A.D. In subsequent centuries, it was damaged by Huns, partially destroyed by natural events and like much of the ancient world, it literally disappeared into history, buried under sediments.

The ruins and the theatre were rediscovered about 50 years ago when a landslide exposed the ruins. Bulgarian archaeologists excavated and restored the well-preserved structure. Today, the amphitheater plays host to opera, theater and music concerts.
